Figure 8.1 The cycle of pre- and perinatal therapy

Whilst I have primarily considered support and integration during early life, the core principles and structure can be used at any period of life. This is due to it being based on perhaps the most vulnerable period of our lives, necessitating a level of pacing and safety required to support integration and secure attachment. For this reason, although PPN therapy was developed to work in the very early stages of life and with young families, it can also be effective right through our lives.

Conclusion

As we make sense of our histories and are able to differentiate our past sensations and feelings from our present-day life, our brain shifts to a more integrated, yet differentiated, social relationship with itself. The differentiation of our ancestral and current early life history from today means that we give children and ourselves the opportunity to have a clearer sense of who we truly are.

As this clarification develops within our generation, and within future generations, we get to develop a more relational society and world rather than a dysfunctional, reactive society.

I mentioned earlier about the pitfalls of too much information coming at us. Within this chapter and the previous one there is a lot of information. The essence of this form of pre- and perinatal work is about the embodiment of it. It cannot be gleaned just by reading about it. As part of honouring the work, I ask that you take the text in these two chapters as part of developing your awareness in this field. If your intention is to practise this form of therapy, I strongly recommend that you take the training in it, as well as experiencing the process workshops. In this way there is the opportunity to embody the work, to ‘get it’ at the somatic or felt sense level. If we attempt to work at the information level only in this field we will miss what our clients, be they adults, children, babies or even prenates, are trying to show us.

Acknowledgements for Chapters 7 and 8

Writing these two chapters has been a journey and I have been fortunate for the generous layers of support made available to me.

I want to thank Ray Castellino for creating this form of work and for his generosity in giving me permission to have carte blanche use of his material. He, together with Mary Jackson, have given their time for interviews and to answer the various questions that continued to arise.

I would also like to thank Klaus Käppeli and Regina Bücher for taking time to read the drafts and provide welcome clarifications. Also, my thanks to John Chitty for his support.

The fullness of the writing would not have been possible without the generous support of my clients. A general thank you to all my clients from whom I have learned so much. Specifically, I want to acknowledge and thank those who gave generously of their time to be interviewed and who gave permission to include their stories. For the reason of confidentiality, I am not saying who, but you each know who you are and I thank you.
